Preserving Our Maritime History

Welcome!

Learn about Presque Isle's rich maritime history as you explore our two lighthouses, range lights, and museums . . .

After a delightful 2024 season, the Old and New Presque Isle Lighthouses and the 1905 Keeper’s House are now closed for the winter. Please remember that, while the buildings are closed, the New Lighthouse Park is open year round. Weather permitting, you can still enjoy the trails and the opportunity to witness our stunning sunrises and sunsets over the waters of Lake Huron and North Bay. For your convenience, there is a porta-potty next to Garrity Hall at the New Lighthouse Park and a vault toilet in the DNR parking lot immediately north of the Harbor for visitors to the Old Lighthouse. We do ask that you keep our park clean by taking all trash and debris with you when you leave.

Exhibit Fundraising Campaign

The Presque Isle Township Museum Society is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of our beloved region, and we need your help to continue our mission! With your generous donation, you can contribute to the development of exciting new exhibits in the historic 1905 Keeper’s House.

These exhibits will offer visitors a deeper understanding of our local heritage and provide opportunities to experience history in an immersive way. While we have limited exhibit space, we are exploring ways to feature more of Presque Isle’s rich history.

By donating to the Presque Isle Township Museum Society, you are not only supporting these engaging exhibits but also ensuring that the 1905 Keeper’s House remains a valuable educational resource for years to come. Your contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference in preserving our heritage and sharing it with future generations. Please consider donating today to help us bring these exhibits to life.

Artist-signed commemorative postcards in frame.

Earlier this year, Robert McGreevy, Great Lakes historian and marine artist, donated pieces of his artwork to the Museum Society to aid our fundraising efforts.

Through January 31, 2025, for a $100 donation toward the Exhibit Campaign, we are offering artist-signed, Robert McGreevy, commemorative postcards (8” x 4.5”) of two Great Lakes ships, attractively displayed in a 12” x 9.5” wooden frame, as well as a $25 individual membership for the Museum Society’s 2025 season.

You may print and complete this form to send your donation, payable to Presque Isle Township Museum Society, to:    Presque Isle Township Museum Society, PO Box 208, Presque Isle, MI 49777

We thank you for your support!

For lighthouse lovers, Presque Isle is a must-see stop in Northern Michigan. Our 1870 Lighthouse is the tallest light on the Great Lakes that the public may climb. Our 1840 Lighthouse is one of the oldest lights on the Great Lakes. And our 1870 Harbor Range Light honors the small, dedicated group of women who were appointed keepers in a profession dominated by men. The beautifully restored 1905 Keeper’s House serves as a museum highlighting local history and the lives of lighthouse keepers and their families.

Easy to find! Hard to leave!

 Preserving our Lighthouses

The Lighthouses of Presque Isle guided the mariners of the past and they continue to inspire us in our own day. So many feel a deep connection to these iconic monuments—they are a legacy that we celebrate locally, and it is our joy to share them with visitors from near and far.

In 2018, Presque Isle Township Museum Society (PITMS) & Presque Isle Township established the Presque Isle Lighthouses Restoration Fund. Administered by the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM), the fund supports the Township’s efforts to restore and preserve the Old and New Lighthouses and related buildings. Lighthouse Restoration Fund donations are accepted throughout the year, not just on GivingTuesday. We encourage you to make a donation to the Lighthouses Restoration Fund by going to Presque Isle Lighthouses Restoration Fund. or mailing your check to PITMS, PO Box 208, Presque Isle, MI 49777
